Simultaneously, another kid of mine got upset that he didn't get picked to take the attendance down to the office, so he wandered around the class, did his art during social studies, drew on the chalkboard, and just plain walked out of the classroom into other people's class...yeah, I got fed up with him fast.

Also funny was the kid who publicly announced that he still fit into the costume he wore 4 years ago because there was still plenty of room at his crotch....sigh...no sense of embarassment...I quickly kept the conversation moving along and asked another student about their weekend.

so for hallowe'en this year, I dressed up as a stack of post-it notes...basically a big cardboard box covered in yellow paper....my students? We had a Batman, Superman, Pumpkin......and Jesus. yes...Jesus. Basically the kid put on a beard and sash and went around treating people nicely, spoke without contractions and holding out his arm referring to the invisible guy beside him as God. He asked me for to go to get a drink from the water fountain and I told him "No...go make your own water." Funny thing was...he then bent down to the ground, gathered up some air and pretended to drink from his hand. Then he asked me again to go to the water fountain. I accused him of blasphemy and then let him go.

Thursday, October 29, 2009

So...many teachers and students are still sick...some teachers are starting the rumour that I'm the one that started the illness...which of course I'm denying...unless you count the part where I'm licking all the keyboards and expectorating phlegm on the doorknobs....yeah, but otherwise, I'm not to blame.

Hallowe'en weekend...hm...should I assign homework?

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

I got back today from having taken 2 days off for being sick...homework's shoddily done, if at all, and once again a whole slew of staff and kids are away with some sort of flu bug. I think I'm over it. Still some coughing...but generally done. And looking back at the posts of prior years, I've noticed that usually around this time, I've taken a day off or two either because I'm sick or because I've just needed a bit of time to unwind. Maybe there's something around this time of year?

Pretty run of the mill day...kid squawking like a chicken in class, kid runnign around showing off his work to everyone, the usual explosion in gym class from the kid who doesn't like it when he's out from dodgeball...he's the flipping out on the chin up bar...picking up benches and dropping them....oh..but the day was capped with one of my kids punching another and calling him a -itch. Yeah, that was a pretty exciting end...as I led him to the office, he was pinching my hand trying to make me let go...oh well, better pinching than biting...especially with h1n1 in the air. It totally did a number on the staff and students...every class had at least half their kids missing today. oh...the grade 6 gifted class was fully present...maybe their immune system is stronger cuz they were carriers of it? Today was therefore lots of just study, finish homework, watch a movie, play a game time. One of the kids (mine, go figure) who was feeling fine, yelled out that this was the best day ever. I made sure to cough all over him and lick all his pencils.

Separate story was that I had one of the kids write an apology letter to another teacher for the way he behaved in class. Here was his title: "I am innocent in a strange world" What a joker...he was playing with his food and contatiners at lunchtime and even made the lunchroom supervisor laugh...to which she then replied to me, "I see why all the girls like him." He's gonna get a Class Clown title in high school...

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

so all my special ed reports are done...woo hoo! it took a lot of papers and hours and time and cursing and swearing...but they're done...passed them off to the principal for editing...and then they'll go home tomorrow...

i think with that huge burden lifted off, i can look more lightly at the things that happened...

for example, today, i had the usual non-compliance from various kids...the same old kid who was depressed and sulking in the corner...only one of my kids made weird noises in class...and another kid stayed under the table for only 10 minutes! (because i asked him to pay attention and put his pencil down)...the usual crier when we asked him to do something he didn't want to do...and noone got hurt today! (unlike last week where a kid decided to grab some tape while his friend was cutting it with scissors...anyway, that kid ended up with 3 stitches...but that's on him)

a couple former students came back to visit and say hi...i finally got to go to the gym and shoot some hoops, run around a bit and just start moving again (i haven't been able to lately cuz i've been tied to the computer typing all those reports)

anyway...enough for now...more tomorrow...for sure....

Friday, October 16, 2009

i'm busy at school still working on IEPs...i stayed till 7:30 yesterday...gross eh? but alas, it must be done cuz i got the OSRs really late from the principal...and she wants them by Monday...ok...i'll get off now and post more later...just needed a quick break...

Monday, October 05, 2009

so many things happening...but i don't usually get the time to blog them right away and then I end up forgetting them later...oh well...here are bits and pieces of the things I do remember...

- the principal asking me to assign less homework cuz 15 minutes reading and 1 page of math is too much per night

- i still occasionally have a kid lying down under the desk when he's upset or distracted...

- one kid threatened my supply teacher, "Yeah, you jsut watch what i'll do..." (and then he crawled under the table)

- one of my kids still makes animal noises in class...pretending he's a dog/cat

- after lunch, the kids come back in and i'm getting ready to teach the gr.5 science class and my gr. 4 student wanders up to me...and stands beside me..."What's up R?" I ask...in a dazed and confused look, he looks at me and then wanders out of the classroom...totally clueless =)

- oh...and if you/anyone ever wonders about why the kids in my class are there...it's because of things like this...one day, a student of mine was supposed to go for an psychoeducational test. He comes back to me when he's done with a big grin on his face and says, "Guess what?!?! I just finished my test and I pretended I was a cat the whole time!"...and that, dear readers, is why the kids in my class, are there. They throw their tests on purpose just to make my life interesting.

Monday, September 28, 2009

kid crying, kids burying his head in his hoodie pouting/sleeping/something or another, kid refusing to stand to o canada, 2 kids running up to me testing out their excuses for not doing their homework, kid walks out on me refusing to listen because i caught him in a lie about him doing his own work...and all of this happening from 8:50 - 9:00 am. It's no wonder my heart skips a beat and adrenaline starts pumping through my veins when that first entry bell rings.

Though a great reminder to me this week....a Godsend...was that I'm here for a reason...because I'm the one who's currently best suited to meet their needs, I'm the one in the school currently with the most patience, insanity, and sense of humour to cope with their tests, battles, and antics.

k...back to work...

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

life is busy teaching 2 different classes...but never a dull moment...

- one of my kids has become extremely paranoid of bees...we tried 1) telling him about going to a safe spot on the playground 2) rationalizing what bees do, how if he runs, screams, and knocks kids over, it's not safe for him or others 3) taping bounty sheets to the door (as bees don't like the smell supposedly?) so that he could go there as a safe spot 4) taping bounty sheets to him (as his "forcefield")...and now...5) giving him a huge oversized fleece jacket that he can wear out to recess so that he can wave the sleeves at any bees that come nearby him...we'll see how long this lasts...

- kid who speaks incessantly... "hey, Mr. C...I have an idea!!!....(cut off)" ..."I have a BETTER idea J...sit down and draw what I have on the board."

- kid who starts crying cuz I told him to take out his math book so i could check his homework (early this morning)

- kid who feigns a stomach ache anytime he senses a writing task is coming up..

geez...tomorrow is curriculum night...so much to do still...so little time!!!

Thursday, September 17, 2009

something kinda funny at the kids' and my expense...

I had eaten something that gave me a bit of tummy trouble...so I went to do my business before school...but als, it was not the end because whatever it was I ate kept rolling around my tummy and was itching to get out...so by the time 10:15 came around...I was becoming more and more antsy. Recess was at 10:25 but basically by 10:20, I was really starting to sweat...and everything I said became an imperative...

"J, DO QUESTION 1"

"B STOP READING!"

"R SIT DOWN! COPY DOWN THE HOMEWORK!"

"P, NO YOU CAN'T GO YET!"

"NO! 7-3 IS NOT 5!...I SAID QUESTION 1!"

"COPY DOWN THE HOMEWORK FIRST THEN GO!"

"YES, OK YOU CAN GO!"

"GO GO GO HAVE A GOOD RECESS! GOODBYE! LEAVE!"

Then, I ran off and relieved myself. siiiigh....=)
